I thought that when sweet baby CB was born I would walk out if the hospital, slide back into my skinny jeans, and other than the new baby it would be like the pregnancy never happened - boy was I wrong. Luckily a good deal of the "roundness" went away after a few weeks of unexpected contractions (why doesn't any body ever talk about all the contractions you have after the baby is born?) At about week 4, I realized that not all of my new-found pudginess would go away on its own, I still had some work to do. Naturally, I took to the internet and read about all of the damage that dieting could do to a breast feeding mother. Between the loss of milk supply and the toxins in the breast milk I started to think that I might just have collected a permanent 10 lb souvenir to remember pregnancy by. Luckily, however, I found a system that is cheap, easy, and hasn't affected my supply. I should take this time to say that I am not a doctor or any kind of medical professional. I'm just a lady on the internet that had a baby and lost some weight afterwards.
After some research I decided to pick up some slim fast bars and shakes. If you're thinking, "gross" or " oh golly, another fad diet," bear with me. I researched my options and found that slim fast is quick, easy, cheap (there are always sales and coupons), not disgusting, safe for baby, and they sell it at the grocery store. Very few diets can boast all of those qualities. At first I followed slim fast's diet instructions to a tee. That DID NOT WORK. Sure, I lost a lot of weight quickly, but most of that weight was from my diminishing milk supply - eek! So I modified the plan and tried again. This is what I do now:
6 am: Meal Bar or Shake
9 am: Sensible Snack, 200 cal or less
12 pm: Meal Bar or Shake
3 pm: Sensible Snack, 200 cal or less
6 pm: Sensible Dinner, I don't count calories, I just eat a colorful meal and stop eating when I'm not hungry any more, even if that means leaving food on the plate.
9 pm: Sensible Snack, 200 cal or less
You can see that I eat what I want, I eat often, and I spend almost no time cooking. I am losing about a pound a week and still have a healthy milk supply.
Again, I'm not a doctor. I'm not a weight loss professional. I wasn't paid by slim fast. I'm just a woman that got to lose a few pounds and feed her baby too :)
I still lounge around in tunics and leggings everyday, but now it's by choice instead of necessity.
