I have recently gotten really interested in the idea of baby sign language. I have done a little bit of research, and it seems like it could be a really useful tool for baby to tell you what they need. I am starting my little guy with three basic signs for words that we use all the time: diaper, eat, and hungry. I have been introducing these signs to him by using them along with a sentence when they apply. For instance, "Do you need a
diaper change?", "We are changing you
diaper!", when it is time, or "Are you
hungry? Do you need to
eat?" right before I feed him. The signs are really easy, and there are lots of free resources all over the place. I like the website
babysignlanguage.com. They have a dictionary with images of lots of baby sign language words, videos of people doing the signs, and ideas of how to teach them to your baby. You can also find lots of baby sign language
books and tools for sale if that's your thing.
